The government of Saint Lucia is taking significant steps to address employee exploitation and create a more fair job market for working-class citizens. Prime Minister Pierre and his Cabinet of Ministers are committed to enhancing the quality of life for working-class Saint Lucians.

In 2022, the government established a new Minimum and Equal Wages Commission (The Commission) to address these issues. The Commission, along with local employers and labor unions, conducted thorough consultations to propose a minimum wage rate. As a result of these efforts, the government has introduced the first-ever legislated minimum wage in Saint Lucia.

This minimum wage ensures that employees are paid no less than $1126 per month, $52 per day, or $6.50 per hour. It is estimated that this increase will positively impact the salaries of nearly 13,000 individuals. This new minimum wage is just the beginning of a comprehensive strategy aimed at lifting more Saint Lucians out of poverty, strengthening the workforce, and ensuring that all citizens can achieve a dignified standard of living.
