Officers attached to the St Lucia Fire Service have taken a preventative approach to fire fighting. The service has begun the installation of early warning devices and suppression apparatus in a number of high risk public buildings. The first  to benefit from this initiative are the Dennery Hospital and the Dennery Police Station, both of which were outfitted with smoke alarms and fire extinguishers on friday April 5th, 2024. The activity forms part of an ongoing drive by the service to reduce the incidence of fires throughout the island.

2023 saw a series of devastating blazes, especially in areas with limited access to fire installations. Several families were left homeless with at least one incident of a differently abled child perishing as a result of a conflagaration. The business community was not left unscathed with fires razing restaurants in Choiseul and Gros Islet.

In an effort to reduce these catastrophic incidents, the St Lucia Fire Service has developed a mitigation strategy designed to provide fire victims with a fighting chance. The program will not be limited to public buildings alone. According to S.L.F.S spokesperson, Acting Station Officer Owen Cazaubon, the intention is to introduce these devices to private homes in the near future.
