Following the ceasefire in the middle east at 2am on Friday May 21, 2021, Palestinians took to the streets of Gaza in a euphoric celebration. However, Hamas official warns that they still have their hands on the trigger.
After eleven days of persistent bombings there is a calm in Gaza and Israel. During the eleven days of conflict between the two, 232 Palestinians have died and 12 Israeli. Hamas had fired thousands of rockets towards Israel most of which were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome Defense System.
Hamas said they would have continued fighting had Israel not agreed to a truce. Osama Hamdan, Senior Hamas official said, “The capabilities of the resistance are still active, and I can assure that what we saw during the first days in terms of bombarding Tel Aviv and some areas in Jerusalem, can continue not only for days or weeks but for months.”
US President Joe Biden stated in a press conference that he commended President Netanyahu for the decision to bring the current hostilities to a close. He also said that the United states fully support Israel’s rights to defend itself against indiscriminate rocket attacks from Hamas and other Gaza-based terrorist groups that have taken the lives of innocent civilians in Israel. Israel’s military offensive on Gaza strip had the full backing of the US President.
According to UNICEF, Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have displaced 72,000 people.
